More than 70 of the state's community leaders met this month at the Tasmanian Opportunity Summit to further develop the concept of Tasmania receiving federal funding to provide onshore asylum seeker processing facilities.
Greens leader Kim Booth yesterday called on the state government to "come to the party", arguing the proposal would see revenue flow into Tasmania.
"This is a very serious proposal, both for human rights and economic reasons," Mr Booth said.
"The Greens are aware that some in our community are anxious that somehow providing assistance to others fleeing horrors in their homelands distracts from the equally important priority of helping Tasmanians in need and doing it tough."
"We believe Tasmanians can do both, and we have a responsibility to at least try."
