This isn't the first time Quan has been less-than-accurate in characterizing the number of police officers patrolling Oakland's streets. Earlier this year Councilwoman Libby Schaaf, a rival candidate for mayor, publicly scolded Quan for masking the size of the police force when she took office.
Quan also gave the editorial board another startling piece of information that turned out not to be entirely true.
"It has now been 16 months without an Oakland police officer drawing their gun on anyone," Quan told the editorial board. "We've been averaging eight incidents a year before this. We can't a find a time in the history of the department — our records only go back 20 years — we found one period where there was seven times, but we've never found a period where we've gone a year without that."
Quan misspoke, Maher said.
