How Libby Schaaf Won in Oakland

Right out of the gate, Oakland Councilwoman Libby Schaaf took the lead over her closest rivals, Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan and the incumbent, Jean Quan. And it only grew as the elimination rounds kicked in. She won by a wide margin.
On Wednesday, both Quan and Kaplan conceded and congratulated Schaaf, and although the results aren’t official, this is clear: Oakland voters spoke with booming authority at the ballot box — and it was long overdue.
In 2006, the Ron Dellums versus Ignacio De La Fuente contest took 10 days to sort out. Oakland’s first ranked-choice election in 2010, in which Quan defeated former state Sen. Don Perata, was a stunning upset.
This time around, Oakland voters rejected political idealism in favor of down-to-earth realism.
