Is this a good deal for the government?
It's safe to say there's never been a lease comparable like this one before, so it's hard to judge. But observers said it was extremely unlikely that another entity could have taken on the extremely complex and expensive job of reskinning Hangar One and rehabbing other portions of the property.
What else does the lease include?
The 1,000-acre site area includes the two runways, Hangar One, Two and Three, the flight operations building and a golf course. The airfield will continue to be used by the National Guard, NASA and other aviation users without interruption. NASA's Ames Research Center will continue to operate normally.
Wait — a golf course?
The Golf Club at Moffett Field opened in 1959 and includes an 18-hole course and restaurant. U.S. citizens can reserve a tee time there with a few days notice, and military and NASA personnel receive a discount. Under the lease agreement, the site must remain a golf course, a NASA representative confirmed to me.
